Truth 2: Intelligence Is a Commodity Infrastructure Layer

AI is not a product feature, a vendor relationship, or a specialized team. It is a foundational capability like electricity or the internet—ubiquitous, assumed, and enabling of fundamentally new possibilities.

If a capability is not available to every product team by default, it is not infrastructure—it is a bottleneck.

Your data science team is a separate department. Product teams request "AI features" through a formal intake process. Models are trained on laptops and deployed by email. The fraud detection model took eight months to build because it required coordination across three departments. By the time it shipped, the fraud patterns had changed.

The alternative: a product team needs a recommendation engine. They call an internal API, provide their data schema, and deploy a model in production in an afternoon. The model is automatically retrained when new data arrives. The team does not know the name of anyone in the "ML platform" team because they have never needed to ask permission.

Build an ML platform, not an ML team. Treat data as a product. Make AI self-service. Invest in proprietary data.
