The Weekly Engineering Judgment Audit

At the start of each week, ask:

  1. Am I measuring what the machine produces or what the human protects? If your metrics do not include decision quality, code review rigor, or risk prevention, you are measuring the wrong thing.
  2. Did I create conditions for an Apprentice to develop judgment this week? If the answer is "nothing," your pipeline is not being fed.
  3. Can every manager on my team explain what earns advancement? If they give different answers, your ladder is not legible.
  4. Who on my team is raising collective judgment, and who is degrading it? Build around the first. Address the second. Do not confuse silence for health.
  5. Is my ladder written, shared, and referenced? If it exists only in your head, your best engineers are making career decisions without the map you owe them.
