Conversation 5: On AI-Generated Code Safety

The question you will hear: "Are we sure all this AI-generated code is safe?"

Your stance: Machine-generated code requires more scrutiny than human-written code, not less, even though it arrives faster.

In the old model, code review assumed the author understood what they wrote. The reviewer checked for bugs, style, and alignment. In the new model, the author—the machine—understands nothing. It predicts tokens based on pattern matching. It has no intent, no accountability, and no ability to explain why it chose one approach over another. Code review must therefore become more rigorous, not less.

How to lead in that room: Bring a governance plan, not reassurance.

  • Updated review standards that explicitly flag patterns common in generated code
  • Automated scanning on every commit for vulnerabilities and license conflicts
  • Escalation paths for code touching authentication, financial transactions, or personal data—human review from senior engineers regardless of how it was produced
  • Metrics tracked and reported: percentage of generated code, incident rates correlated with generated components, time to resolution, audit findings

The CFO does not need a promise of zero risk. They need evidence that someone is thinking about this with rigor. The general counsel does not need trust in engineers. They need a documented process that would survive regulatory scrutiny.
